If you want to start sewing as a hobby, you need to ensure that you have everything you need. Below are two of these things so you can get started learning this new craft.

Sewing Machine

When it comes to sewing machines, you have different types to choose from. The most common type and the one that you will likely need is a domestic sewing machine. These machines are meant for use at home and can be used to sew almost anything that you need. You do need to be aware that some domestic sewing machines will only sew straight seams. There are others that will sew zig-zag seams and stitches, which makes the sewing machine more versatile.

There are also electronic sewing machines which are more advanced. You may want to wait until you get experience or know that you want to continue your hobby before buying this type. An electronic sewing machine can be used in more advanced sewing projects. This machine features an LCD display and generally has a touchscreen to allow you to choose the settings that you need.

Thimble

A thimble is a small cup that you wear on your finger, which is generally the index finger. This is the finger that you use to push the sewing needle when you are sewing. Thimbles come in a variety of sizes, so you should have no problem finding one that fits well on your finger.

One thing about thimbles is that they are small and very easy to lose. Because of this, along with the thimble, purchase a thimble cage. This is a holder to place the thimble in. The cage is placed on a necklace that you wear around your neck. The cage is also decorative, so people would not even know it had a thimble inside of it. In most cases you can easily open the cage to remove the thimble without having to take the necklace off.

Once you get everything that you need to start sewing, you need to then learn how. There are classes that you can take. For example, local craft stores should offer beginner classes. They can also tell you everything else you need to purchase to get started. If you do not want to take a physical class, there are online classes that you can take at your own pace. No matter what you choose, make sure that they start at the beginner level and then take more advanced classes when you are ready.
